After Further Review

Let's talk about week 7 and look ahead into week 8. First let's talk a little bit about the undefeated teams:

-Independence still looks really good on both sides of the ball. Case in point: isn't it funny how the last two games they have played have been the exact score (42-14)? The last two games of the season (East Meck, Butler) will be the games where they will really be tested. It's also great to see the chemistry the passing game has with Carrothers throwing to Lawrence Martin & Michael Rhynes. They are definitely in sync...

-I'm still shocked how dominant Butler has been this year. I never thought they would be a terrible team, but with them losing so many guys last year, I didn't expect them to be dominant either. This shows how great of a coach Mike Newsome is. He truly is a special coach that has an excellent football mind.

-East Meck is a punsihing football team. They remind me of the Pittsburgh Steelers in terms of how physical they play on both sides of the ball. Whenever teams play East Meck, they feel it the next morning. That is why I can't wait to see the game this Friday when they play Butler....

-Mallard Creek was in a dogfight last Friday against Vance. There game this Friday at North Meck will be a harder game for them than most think because it's a rivalry game. A lot of kids that play for Mallard Creek use to play for North Meck, so the Vikings are going to be pumped for that game...

Here are my quick thoughts on a few of the great players in the area

-Congrats to Mallard Creek DB Josh Hunter for committing to UNC

-Charlotte Christian K Will Kamin is an unbelievable kicker. Kicking 50+ plus yards is nothing for that kid. Could definitely see him playing for the Auburn Tigers next year

-Charlotte Catholic RB Joe Felts is making people forget about the great RB they had last year in Wes Stringfield (now at App State). He is putting up big numbers & is on pace to break 1000 yards rushing for the season

-Big big props to Garinger!!! Not one, but two wins in the span of five days. I'm so happy for the coaching staff, led by Chris Carter, and more importantly, the players, because these two wins proves to them and other kids that hard work, perserverance and not giving up really does pay off

Here are my non high-school football thoughts

- What happened to ECU football?

-Welcome back UNC football! It's been awhile

-Aside from Urban Meyer at Florida, has anyone made a bigger turnaround in recent memory than Nick Saban over at Alabama?

-Surprise team of the year in the NFL? Got to be the Washington Redskins

-I know I kinda bashed Reggie Bush in my last blog, but maybe I spoke too soon. Dude is currently leading the NFL in receptions (38).

-Wouldn't it be crazy if the Dodgers played the Red Sox in the World Series? It would be all about Manny Ramirez

-To the video game junkies out there...can Call of Duty compete with Halo? Just curious...

After Further Review

Let's talk about week 5 and look ahead into week 6. First let's talk a little bit about the undefeated teams:

-Independence looks like the Indy of old. Last year's team was different from the aerial teams in the pass. That's because they had a stud RB in Rod Chisholm & they were breaking in a brand new QB in Anthony Carrothers. Speaking of Carrothers, he is the main reason why their offensive style from the past is back. After three games, he has almost passed for 1000 yards. If there was an CHSF.com MVP for the first third of the season, it would go to Anthony. He's playing phenomnal football.

-Did people count Butler out early? After losing so many talenetd players to graduation, most people thought this would be a down year for the football program. Not so fast (yes I stole the line from ESPN's Lee Corso).   With winning all four games in convincing fashion, they seem to have reloaded instead of rebuilding. They are going to be tested next week against AK, but the real test will be the middle of October when they plat at Myers Park (10/10), home to East Meck (10/17) & then on the road against South Meck (10/24).  If they are undefeated after that tough stint, watch out Independence

-If you want to talk resilent, talk East Meck football. After losing their best defensive player (Gardner Webb LBLB Devin Johnson), their best offensive player (NC A&T RB Mike Mayhew), and their coach for the first two games, they have found a way to win. They probably have the best secondary in the county with Tim & Tray Sanders along with S Jamario Sinclair. These guys play hard nosed football....

-I think it's awesome that Charlotte Christian is undefeated. I love their football program. But I do think they have a had a very soft schedule. The real test will be  next month when they play Latin, Northern Guilford (undefeated), Country Day, Ravenscroft (undefeated) & Providence Day. By the way, RB/LB Ty Linton has been playing like an MVP. Great player...

-Mallard Creek is the story of the season. People started off saying that they remind them of last year's Ardrey Kell team. But they have far surpassed that. The turn around is off the charts. Despite losing a very good LB in Cameron Davis (knee injury), they seem to be loaded at every position. Coach Palmeiri may want to kill me for saying this, but looking at their schedule, there is a real chance they may go undefeated before heading into the playoffs. The only game I can possibly see them losing is either North Meck (10/17 road game) or West Charlotte (10/31 home game). Folks, Mallard Creek is for real...

Here are my quick thoughts on a few of the great players in the area

-Olympic QB Lucas Beatty & WR Blair Boler are a great tandem

-South Meck RB Tim Palmer could go down as one of the most successful student-athletes in South Meck history. Think about it...over 1300 rushing yards as a sophomore,  over 1300 rushing yards as a junior & over 300 yards rushing in one game (against Waddell). Those numbers are incredible

-Want to know who are the best dual threat QB's in the city of Charlotte? Look no further than Country Day QB Hedley Jennings & Harding QB Walt Aikens. Both are worth the price of admission

-No one really knows Waddell WR Derryck Turner, but they should. If he played on a team like say, Catholic or Independence, people would be talking about him as being one of the best WR's in the county. I remember Waddell's former coach, Andre Carr, telling me that he thought that Turner was the best WR in the city. He said the kid's talent is unbelievable. Check him out next week when they play Harding

Here are my non high-school football thoughts

- I hate the Yankees. I'm glad they aren't going to be playing in October

-Could the Trojans of USC beat the worse team in the NFL? Judging from their game against Ohio State, that's not a ridiculous question

-Looks like ECU is for real. Even though they beat Virgina Tech, I bet they wouldn't beat the Deacs

-Dallas looks great offensively, but what's up the D?

-I'm sorry but I really thought Reggie Bush would be a much better player than he has shown so far in his three-year NFL career. He was one of the best college players I've ever seen in my life.  I just can't figure what the deal is.

-To all the college basketball heads, I have a great question for you: If Stephen Curry played for the Tar Heels, do you think he would start over Wayne Ellington? The biased Heels' fans would probably say no, but I think they know the real deal. Wayne is a baller but Steph is on another level

-I love to talk about food because like most guys, I like to eat. Surprise! Having said that, if you like hamburgers, which place do you think has the better burgers between Cookout & Five Guys? Ah, that a tough one isn't it? Shoot me an email & tell me what you think. I will say that Five Guys have the better fries no doubt...

-CHSF.com MVP watch after five weeks: #5-Charlotte Latin WR/DB Ross Cockrell, #4-Charlotte Christian RB/LB Ty Linton, #3-Independence WR Lawrence Martin, #2-South Meck RB Tim Palmer, #1-Independence QB Anthony Carrothers

Until next week...
